SPEAKING
Are you looking for a great Chicago-area speaker? As a veteran digital marketing director and startup mentor with 1871, I can bring you unique insights on marketing and entrepreneurship.
In addition to teaching startup founders at the 1871 business incubator’s PYROS program, I’m the host of the Risk@Work web series on corporate risk, and the creator of the PowerPost Brand Publishing Masterclass.
I mix these fascinating areas of small business, digital marketing and risk to give you unique insights on building and promoting strong ventures.
“Scott is a very powerful speaker. He’s funny, engaging, and present. He brought a unique and different perspective to the presentation that I found to be insightful, engaging, and extremely helpful in my own business.”
I have spoken at numerous marketing panels and keynoted for several Chicagoland industry associations, such as the Baptie Marketing Roadshow, the North Shore Convention and Visitor Bureau, and the Digital Marketing Topics and Trends Chicago Meetup.
If your audience wants an engaging, incisive learning experience related to analytics, marketing or building a startup, I would love to help you!
Below are a few of my most popular keynote topics.
KEYNOTE PROGRAMS
CRAFTING KILLER CONTENT:
HOW TO CREATE MARKETING CONTENT THAT CUTS THROUGH THE NOISE AND GENERATES MORE SALES
Mark Schaefer was right when he predicted years ago that we would eventually reach a physical limit to the amount of content that humans can consume. We can’t just write a few blogs and expect our business to succeed. Audiences are much pickier about what they consume. Together, we explore the most common mistakes that businesses make with their published content, and you will learn how to craft efficient, targeted content that gets results.
BUILDING AN ANTIFRAGILE STARTUP:
HOW TO CREATE A BUSINESS THAT DOESN’T JUST SURVIVE, BUT GAINS FROM STRESS
Wouldn’t it be amazing if you could set up your business to get stronger from stress the way muscles strengthen from resistance? I take a look at startup operations through the lens of Nassim Taleb’s concept of antifragility. You will learn to use the principles of antifragility to create businesses that don’t just survive stressors, but actually cultivates them as fuel for growth!
ANALYTICS AND MARKETING FUNNELS FOR STARTUPS
Analytics can seem overwhelming to most founders. At best, the learning curve is a distraction from operating your core business. I will take you how to build a simple, FREE tech stack for web presence and analytics. Then, we cover how to set up benchmarking, testing, and dashboards that give you meaningful information on the health of your business. As a bonus, I take you through the six analytics errors that trip up new founders.
THE “MAD MEN” PRESENTATION:
MESSAGING PSYCHOLOGY FOR ADVERTISING
This is my most requested session. In a group setting, we learn the basic principles of messaging psychology, principles I’ve synthesized over ten years of reading and blogging about advertising and cognition. Then, we view examples of B2B and B2C video ads, and discuss the principles incorporated in each ad. Attendees come away with hands-on learning about the subtle psychological forces at work, and feeling like they too could wield them as Don Draper would.
AWKWARD ADOLESCENCE:
SOLUTIONS FOR YOUR JUST-BIGGER-THAN-SMALL BUSINESS
Under $1M, businesses can get away with murder. Nothing’s written down, money gets wasted, systems are sloppy, employees are freewheeling…and yet somehow you’re still making some money. This is the start-up culture that everyone says that they love. Above $10M, however, everything looks different. Systems and processes must be in place to survive. Quality must be consistent. Departments must operate without constant supervision. Scott talks about getting from here to there – the process of professionalization: the systems, habits, and priorities that can push a business through its awkward adolescence.
